Trade Theory – Semester 3

  1. Limits, Fits & Tolerances

    • Types of fits: Clearance, interference, transition

    • Allowance, tolerance and fundamental deviations

    • Gauging and limit systems

  2. Surface Finish and Measurement

    • Importance of surface roughness

    • Measuring instruments: Feeler gauges, dial test indicators

    • Lapping, honing, and grinding

  3. Interchangeability and Quality Control

    • Importance in mass production

    • Inspection tools and quality checks

    • Basic concepts of ISO and BIS standards

  4. Machine Fitting & Dismantling

    • Precision fitting of machine parts

    • Keys, cotters, couplings, and bearing fitting

    • Dismantling and assembling of pumps, gearboxes, and valves

  5. Maintenance and Repair

    • Preventive and breakdown maintenance

    • Lubrication, alignment, and fault detection

    • Tools for maintenance: Pullers, hydraulic jacks, torque wrenches


Trade Practical – Semester 3

  1. Advanced fitting operations (slots, angular fittings)

  2. Key and cotter joint fitting with accuracy

  3. Machine part dismantling and reassembly (e.g., valves, pumps)

  4. Surface plate inspection and limit gauge usage

  5. Preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment


Trade Theory – Semester 4

  1. Lathe Machine Basics

    • Parts of lathe and working principle

    • Turning, facing, threading, taper turning

    • Cutting speed, feed, and depth of cut

  2. Pipe and Tube Fitting

    • Types of pipes: GI, PVC, MS

    • Pipe cutting, threading, bending, and jointing

    • Pipe vice, threading dies, wrenches

  3. Basic Welding and Fabrication

    • Arc/gas welding techniques for fabrication

    • Welding symbols and drawing interpretation

    • Sheet metal bending, marking, and joining

  4. Hydraulics and Pneumatics (Intro)

    • Basic working principles

    • Hydraulic pumps, actuators, pressure valves

    • Pneumatic cylinders and air compressors


Trade Practical – Semester 4

  1. Practice on lathe turning, facing, grooving

  2. Pipe threading and pipe layout installation

  3. Welding of basic joints (lap, T-joint, corner joint)

  4. Hydraulic jack dismantling and reassembly

  5. Final project: Fabrication and fitting of a working model (e.g., hand pump, trolley, vice)


Workshop Calculation & Science (Year 2)

  • Angular measurement, simple machine calculations

  • Tolerances, fits, and limits

  • Speed, feed, and machining calculations for lathe

  • Pipe volume and pressure calculations

  • Mechanical advantage and efficiency


Engineering Drawing (Year 2)

  • Pipe fitting layout and assembly drawing
