Community Medical Services and Essential Drugs (CMS & ED) – Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualification

  • Minimum: 10th or 12th Pass

  • Preferred: 12th Pass with Science (Biology)

  • Candidates with backgrounds in nursing, paramedics, or health-related vocational training are often given preference

2. Age Limit

  • Minimum: 17 years

  • Maximum: No fixed upper age limit 

3. Other Requirements

  • Physically and mentally fit for fieldwork in community health

  • Interest in rural healthcare, first aid, and basic medicine

  • Some courses may require a personal interview or aptitude test


Syllabus for CMS & ED Course

A. Core Medical Subjects

1. Anatomy and Physiology

  • Structure and functions of the human body

  • Major systems: digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, reproductive

  • Basics of cell, tissue, organs, and glands

2. Pathology and Microbiology

  • Introduction to diseases and their causes

  • Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites

  • Common infections and prevention

3. Pharmacology (Essential Drugs)

  • Classification of drugs

  • Common drugs used in primary healthcare

  • Dosage, indications, contraindications, and side effects

  • Drug administration routes and calculations


B. Community Medical Services

4. Primary Health Care

  • Health indicators and community health structure

  • Management of fever, diarrhea, dehydration, wounds, and infections

  • First aid and emergency care in rural settings

  • Common communicable and non-communicable diseases

5. Maternal and Child Health (MCH)

  • Antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal care

  • Immunization schedule and child growth monitoring

  • Nutritional care and hygiene for mother and child

6. Public Health and Sanitation

  • Clean drinking water and sanitation practices

  • Waste disposal and disease prevention

  • Role of health workers in awareness and hygiene promotion


C. Practical Training

 

  • Dispensing Essential Drugs (OTC level, non-scheduled drugs only)

  • Vital Signs Monitoring: Temperature, pulse, blood pressure

  • Basic Diagnostic Skills: Use of BP apparatus, stethoscope, glucometer

  • Emergency First Aid: CPR, wound dressing, fracture management

  • Field Work: Conducting health surveys and home visits

  • Record Keeping: OPD, referral, drug inventory, and patient registers
